XC2V FLYPmode - Military Vehicle developed by opensource style

FLYPmode XC2V is a military vehicle built instantly in 14 weeks by Local Motor, an Open Source automotive company. It has been built based on selected design out of more than 150 design submissions. The objective is to get public opinion on the best package for military mobile car. The designs has been submitted based on the challenge that has been made by Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

XC2V stands for Experimental Crowd-Derived Combat-Support Vehicle. Based on DARPA, requirement for XC2V was a dual-mission military vehicle that could adequately perform combat reconnaissance and evacuation.

As for the package itself, the prototype vehicle was designed to have a maximum loaded weight of 2,700 kg, which is about the same range of SUV like Murano, X-trail etc.. Current prototype is powered by a General Motors LS3 V8. It has a Ford-sourced solid rear axle and independently movable individual front suspension, and was built on a special Local Motors tubular-steel chassis. Other unique features included in the selected design are an extending trunk and a window setup that allows for almost 360 degrees of visibility.

Interesting facts and figures about this project is that the prototype has been built in 14 weeks which is 5x faster than current automotive standards to kick-off a project until prototype stage. As for full model change or new model, normally, it might takes 18 ~ 24 months to be completed until actual production stage (SOP).

How do they do it?

As a Malaysian, I am looking forward to see our local engineers or researcher to develop ANY kind of vehicle using this open source concept! Currently co-organized event, KEMAHIRAN MALAYSIA by PROTON can be the most suitable place to generate this kind of idea.
